This month we sat down with The Hashi, a three-piece alternative rock band that has been rehearsing at Gemini for four years. Read about how they got started, what a lockout rehearsal studio has meant for their creative process, and where to find their music.

Name of your band?

The Hashi

What does the name mean?

Our name comes from TMNT — Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Who’s in the group?

  • Matt Peterson — Drums
  • Ben Peterson — Bass
  • Matt Jay — Guitar and Vocals

How did you guys meet?

We met through mutual friends at Whittier High School in 2006.

How long have you been together?

Going on four years together as a band.

What genre of music would you consider yourself and who are your influences?

We would consider ourselves alternative rock. Current favorites include Skegss, Violent Soho, Beach Goons, Together Pangea, IDLES, TOTTY, and The Chats.

What is the best advice you have been given about playing music?

Do not care about what people think. Just go for it and give it your all.

What are you working on right now?

We are currently working on our second EP and about to release a single. The full EP should be out by summer 2021.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you as a band?

Having our EP played in Australia and Canada was probably the craziest thing to happen so far.

What is your best advice for playing live shows?

Pick a strong opening song that gives the audience that first punch into your set.

What practice tips help your band rehearsals?

Always record any idea you have. You never know if a certain part can be used in the future.

How has having a lockout studio helped you?

Having the lockout has helped us practice more consistently. Not being rushed is huge. Before Gemini we paid by the hour at shared rehearsal rooms and it was hard to create music in a tight time frame. Having our own private space changed everything about how we write and rehearse.

If you are thinking about making the switch from hourly to monthly, take a look at our rehearsal studio sizes and pricing to find the right room for your setup.

How long have you been at Gemini?

2021 will be four years for us at Gemini.
