This month we sat down with Avenue of the Sun, a three-piece SoCal post alternative rock band who recently signed to a record label after a battle of the bands at the House of Blues. Read about how they got started, what drives their creative process, and why their first piece of advice to any band is to get a 24-hour lockout rehearsal studio.
Name of your band?
Avenue of the Sun
Where does the name come from?
We grew up in Hollywood and Gabriel built his first studio at his uncle’s house on Avenida Del Sol. We were playing a gig at The Joint and needed a band name. It came together naturally from there.
Who’s in the group?
- Gabriel C — Singer, Guitarist, and Songwriter
- JBH — Bass
- Brian Perrero — Drums
How did you guys meet?
Gabriel and Brian met in a Jane’s Addiction tribute band about eight years ago. Gabriel met JBH at a party at the NAMM show six years ago.
What genre of music would you consider yourself and who are your influences?
SoCal post alternative rock is the closest fit. We draw influences from across the spectrum, from rock to hip hop. Main influences include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More, Lit, and Jet. We also play some covers from Lit and Jet in our live sets.
What is the best advice you have been given about playing music?
The first piece of advice is to get a 24-hour lockout rehearsal studio. No time constraints, no more loading in and out every session. The second is to learn the business end of the music industry. Both matter more than most bands realize early on.
If you are ready to make the move to a private monthly rehearsal space, take a look at our rehearsal studio sizes and pricing to find the right room for your setup.
What is the craziest thing that has happened to you as a band?
We played a battle of the bands at the House of Blues and ended up getting signed by a record label. Hard to top that one.
What practice tips help your band rehearsals?
Communication is everything. You have to express how you feel about the music and the direction of the band. You need a leader, but you also need input from everyone. The bands that last are the ones that figure out how to have both.
What are some tips for playing live gigs?
Keep the volume in check so you do not blow everybody’s ears out. Your audience will thank you and you will play better for it.
What are you working on right now?
Avenue of the Sun has four new songs out now as part of their Sol Rey, Sun King release. Stream them on Spotify and Apple Music below.
